How to use the Worship Trend Map

Chart Axes

Use the X and Y dropdowns in the sidebar to choose two of these five formational axes:

• Personal ↔ Corporate — Whose voice is singing? "Me/I" vs "we/our"
• Intimate ↔ Declarative — Tender, near speech vs proclamation and acclamation
• Devotional ↔ Theological — Felt closeness vs propositional weight
• Contemporary ↔ Traditional — Modern songwriting vs hymn tradition
• Christological ↔ Trinitarian — Focus on Christ alone vs full Trinity

Views

• Map View — The default scatter map. Each song is one dot, positioned by its X/Y axis values. Dot size = times sung. Use this to see your overall spread.
• Trend Over Time — Plots how the weighted center of your song mix has moved across the date range on the chosen Y-axis dimension. Pick the Y axis in the sidebar to track different dimensions of drift (e.g., Personal↔Corporate over the year). Helps you see at a glance whether your worship has shifted in a direction.

Overlays

• Show Drift Line — Computes the weighted center of all your songs (heavier songs = larger pull) and marks it with a circle. Tells you the "average song" of your rotation. Useful for noticing drift over time.
• Show Zones — Adds colored quadrants labeled to help interpret each corner of the chart at a glance (e.g. "Doctrinal/Corporate," "Intimate/Personal").

Color By

Recolor the dots to surface different patterns:

• Era — Classic Hymn (purple), Modern Hymn (blue), Contemporary (orange)
• Song Type — Doctrinal, Praise, Testimony, Prayer, Lament, Liturgical
• Tradition — Reformed, Charismatic, Liturgical, Broad
• Frequency — Heat gradient: lighter = sung rarely, darker = sung often

Reading the chart pastorally

This tool is descriptive, not prescriptive. A worship diet heavy in one quadrant isn't necessarily wrong — but seeing it laid out helps you ask better questions. Is our season skewing intimate without enough declarative? Are we underweight on Trinitarian doxology? Which classical hymns have quietly dropped out? The chart is a mirror, not a verdict.
